In the heart of Tuscany, one of the region’s most cherished folk traditions is renewed every year: that of the Maggerini. A celebration rooted in ancient propitiatory rites tied to spring, the fertility of the land, and rural life.
Il Maggio is a rural festival held on May 1st and in the days that follow, celebrated in many parts of Tuscany, especially in the provinces of Pisa, Florence, Livorno, and Lucca. The main characters of this tradition are groups of singers, musicians, and performers in traditional costume who go from house to house, or from farm to farm, singing songs of good wishes and stories in ottava rima.
The songs of Maggio speak of love, nature, farm work, and ancient folk legends. Instruments such as the accordion and guitar bring rhythm and warmth to the performances, accompanying the voices with joyful and engaging melodies. A distinctive feature of the Maggerini is the use of colorful paper flowers worn as decorations — a festive symbol that evokes spring and the vital energy this tradition aims to celebrate.
In exchange for their performance, the Maggerini are warmly welcomed with local products, wine, and hospitality, in a spirit of joyful sharing.
Every year we are pleased to welcome the Maggerini to Agriturismo Lillastro, giving our guests the chance to witness an authentic and moving spectacle that brings to life the most genuine soul of Tuscan rural culture. It has become a tradition for us as well to conclude the evening with a convivial dinner featuring local dishes, accompanied by music, laughter, and the magic of a celebration that beautifully bridges past and present.
